ASTHO is excited to partner with ecoAmerica to provide Climate for Health Ambassadors training to our state and territorial health agency members and their staff at no cost — equipping them with specific resources and tools to address the impacts of climate change in their jurisdiction. Climate change and extreme weather events continue to threaten public health, safety, and quality of life. ASTHO supports building and sustaining healthy, climate-resilient communities that are prepared for climate change and extreme weather events. Implementing public health programs that increase the capacity to prevent, protect, and respond to the impacts of climate and extreme weather improve a community’s overall readiness and resilience. Every state and U.S. territory are at risk of vector-borne diseases. This year, dengue cases are on the rise in Puerto Rico. Florida has also reported locally transmitted cases of dengue this year. We are already seeing record numbers of cases in the Americas and the Caribbean, with 2019 seeing the highest number of cases on record in the Americas. Numbers of tickborne diseases continue to climb this summer, with Lyme disease continuing to be the most reported vector-borne disease in the U.S.

Climate Change Adaptation Activities and Needs in US State and Territorial Health Agencies

In 2021, ASTHO conducted an online survey with state and territorial health agency staff requesting information on current activities related to climate change and health, the state of climate and health programming, and anticipated needs and priorities for assistance. This report shares the analyzed survey results using descriptive statistics.
